J. M. Waller Receives Preservation Honor Award from Historic Hawai’i Foundation

J. M. Waller received a Preservation Honor Award from the Historic Hawai’i Foundation for our part in master planning, design and rehabilitation work of Hickam Non-Select Historic Homes at joint Base Pearl Harbor. This is our company’s second straight year receiving a Preservation Honor Award and third award overall.

The rehabilitation project of the Non-Select Historic Homes is a continuation of the 2011 award-winning preservation of historic homes in the Hickam Housing District. This project is the nation’s largest rehabilitation and restoration project for a single contiguous historic community.

The Historic Hawai’i Foundation lauded J. M. Waller for taking precise care to preserve as much of the historical attributes of the homes as possible. When original materials could not be saved or left in place, new materials were closely matched to originals in order to maintain the historic integrity of the homes. These structurally safe, historically restored, newly insulated and expanded living space homes will ensure that families will be able to enjoy them for decades while preserving a national historic community for the future.

“We will continue our goal to engineer solutions which supply modern functionality while maintaining the historically significant features of the built environment without compromising historic architectural features or designations,” said Charles W. Scott RA, RID, REM, PMP, CFM, J. M. Waller President and Chairman of the Board. ”We are honored that the Historic Hawai’i Foundation recognized the cultural services, master planning and design efforts that went into the restoration of these historic homes.”

Each of the 89 units of fully-restored historic homes within the Hickam Housing District was originally constructed between 1937 and 1941 for commissioned and non-commissioned officers’ homes. J. M. Waller’s design for the restoration of these homes harkened back to the original master plan for Hickam Field in 1935.

This is the 37th year of the Preservation Honor Awards, which are Hawai’i’s highest recognition of preservation projects that perpetuate, rehabilitate, restore or interpret the state’s architectural, archeological and cultural heritage.
